Consequently, in the fall of 1980 the voters of the United States elected former movie star, Ronald Reagan, as President. Reagan epitomized the sentiments of many Americans with his conservative fiscal ideas and his strong stance against communism, which eventually lead to the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Influential Women in the 1980s Throughout the United States, however, there was another war going on ... The War on Drugs. In a major change in society, drugs were no longer just the domain of college students and former Vietnam War veterans. They were now a serious problem at all levels of society. Cocaine had become popular with celebrities, while a cheaper version of it, called crack, was turning our cities into battle zones, much like during the 1930s and the days of Prohibition. First Lady Nancy Reagan, with the support of her husband, promoted the "Just Say No" anti-drug program, with marginal success. However, as in the past, only a few women were working in the fields of physical sciences, engineering, agriculture and law. Although our nation was beginning to make strides in this area, in 1989 the proportion of women engineers was still only 7.5%. As in the past, most of the women who received a college education majored in the fields of education, social service, home economics, nursing and library science. Throughout American society, the majority of women who worked continued to be employed in traditional female occupations such as clerical positions, factory work, retail sales, service jobs, secretaries, bookkeepers, typists, waitresses, cooks, hospital attendants, cleaning women and hairdressers. Very few women were in decision-making jobs. In 1988, women were paid about 32% less than men. This was, in fact, progress from 1970 when women only earned about 49% of what men did. Unfortunately, there was still a wide gap. However, although women still lagged behind men in many fields, feminism was not completely dead. Women had been able to vote since 1920, but it was in 1984 that a major party chose a woman candidate to run for vice-president, Geraldine Ferraro of New York. Women no longer felt as though they needed to be portrayed as cute, young sex symbols, as they had been on "Charlie's Angels," one of the more popular television shows in the 1970's. Instead, women could be overweight, middle aged, or even elderly, and still be able to keep the attention of the typical American television viewer. In television, as well as other areas of American society, women were beginning to make visible strides. As a mother of young children during the 1980s, my teen years and young adult years during the 1960s and 1970s seemed to have existed in another lifetime. Like many young women who had grown up during those eras, I was now busy with my home and family life, concerned with fashion and consumer goods. As common as cellulite is, there's also an awful lot of misinformation out there about what it is, what causes it, and how to get rid of it. So before placing blame, scheduling a cosmetic procedure, or spending a fortune on over-the-counter products, read up on the real story behind cellulite. But neither their efficacy nor their claims about what causes cellulite are supported by science. "Mostly I think if these topical creams work--and I think most probably do little or nothing--they are more likely to help with slimming and body contouring, which is not the same as cellulite," says McDaniel. Some (like TriActiv and VelaSmooth laser treatments) require 10 to 15 sessions to significantly improve appearance, and require monthly maintenance appointments. "I am not a doctor, but because I focus only on cellulite, I can provide many more options in my center than most doctors can provide in their offices," she says. Medi-spas can also perform treatments such as Endermologie and non-invasive laser procedures--but Ein-Dor cautions that you make sure your technician is licensed and has received proper training on whatever device you choose. (If you want a surgical procedure like Cellulaze, however, you'll need to see a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.) In fact, for some tight clothes, the opposite may be true: Elastic bands on underwear, for example, can actually contribute to the appearance of cellulite if they cut off circulation and limit blood flow. Myths and Facts About CelluliteSmoking can affect the appearance of cellulite: Fact Cigarette smoke has been shown to reduce blood vessel flow and to weaken and disrupt the formation of collagen, allowing for the connective tissue to become stretched and damaged more easily and for underlying fat to show through. Plus, smoking can make you look bad (literally) in lots of other ways, as well: It causes premature wrinkles and aging, leave skin dry and discolored and can contribute to stretch marks, to name a few. 15 Ways Smoking Ruins Your Looks Myths and Facts About CelluliteSmoking can affect the appearance of cellulite: Fact This one's not exactly true or false, but scientists do seem to be getting better and better at finding long-term solutions for treating trouble spots. The most recent and promising procedure is a surgery called Cellulaze, approved by the FDA in 2012, in which an optic laser melts fat, breaks up fibrous connective tissue and stimulates the growth of new collagen, all through a pinhole-sized incision in the skin. "It's great because it works on both those fibers that are pulling down your skin and on the fat globules that are popping through," says Karcher. Recovery is quick, too: "You might be a little bit sore afterward, but you can have it done on a Friday and be back to work by Monday." | CAPE TOWN CAPE TOWN Netherlands winger Arjen Robben is set to make his first appearance at this World Cup against Cameroon on Thursday -- in a pair of orange tights. "With Arjen we waited until tonight's training and now we'll wait to see how he responds tomorrow and if everything looks well he will be in the team," said coach Bert Van Marwijk. Robben sat out the Group E wins over Denmark and Japan with a hamstring injury but took a full and vigorous part in Wednesday's training session at Green Point stadium. Although Netherlands have already clinched a place in the second round, and Cameroon are out of the running, the Dutch could still need a point to secure top spot. With a possible last 16 meeting with Italy on the cards, Van Marwijk is keen to get Robben back in the groove. The winger trained in black compression tights to help protect the hamstring on a chilly night in Cape Town but Dutch officials were unsure whether he would be allowed to wear them in the match or would have to wear orange tights. The regulations state that commonly-worn "cycling shorts" must match the color of the team's shorts. "When it comes to tights we are not sure but don't worry, we are prepared for anything and everything," said Van Marwijk. The coach had previously said he would not play a weakened team, hoping to avoid the fate of the Dutch in their last two tournaments when they also qualified with a game to spare, rested some regulars and then lost their first knockout match. However, he said on Wednesday he would consider the disciplinary situation and look ahead to the second round. TALENTED PLAYERS "We have three on a yellow card (Robin van Persie, Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel) and that has to be taken into account. Sometimes you have to think ahead," he said."
